The biggest defense in terms of car alarms is in the install. Make sure the installer is very reputbale and knows what he is doing. Also layering works VERY well, such as using a back up siren with a secondary battery, a horn inside the cabin, use of an autolock and/or club. The more things your car has, the MUCH more likely the theif will just pass your car and go to the next.
Also you could always get a quick release steering hub which doubles as a theft detterent system too!!
