what I usually let people know is that skin is like tint. the darker you are...the more "tint" there is. Kinda like looking at something with sun glasses on. If you are going for a specific "purple" color...maybe go a couple shades lighter....I've done a few color tattoos on (no offense to anyone) black people.
And I would have to say if I didn't have such a heavy art background, I don't think it would have come out right. Instead of a dark purple...have him mix a bright blue, and a almost pinkish red....it'll give a heavy light purple.
This was a year or so ago...but it'll give you an idea.
I have also found that INTENZE ink puts down the brightest pigment in case he uses anything else. I'm no expert...nor do I have years of experience...but I have a heavy art background. Hope this helps a little.
