Transmission questions

ALright, I have a 1990 Hatch and the KA24e in it runs rather well. I don't feel the need to change out the motor any time soon, but I may have just run into a snag.

I went out to start the car today and it was left in gear overnight (parked on a hill) I pressed in the clutch and while in gear, it wouldn't start. I put the car into neutral, and it started up with no problems. Then, however, once it was running, the car wouldn't go into any gears!

To me, this just sounds like the clutch is out, but to me that doesn't make any sense because if the clutch was out, I wouldn't be able to push the clutch in and start it no matter what gear it was in, including neutral. However, I am new to the 240sx community and was wondering if you guys may know of anything else that could have made this happen? Could the differential have anything to do with this?

This car is not my daily driver, just something I picked up to have fun with on the weekends (mods will be the usual suspects like coils and some decent wheels).

Any insight is appreciated! Thanks a bunch
