Well I have not been able to post any pictures after having posted some in the Zenkis United thread. This is a bummer. I guess I have to have more post before I can upload more pictures. I also have some news about Competition Clutch that feel I should share with other 240 owners. Due to the fact that I don't seem to be able to create that thread I will post it in my build thread for now. I is part of what happend to me recently during the build up of my s14.
Problem with Competition Clutch
I am very disappointed with Competition Clutch. I had an issue with the clutch slipping and I let them know about the issue. They gave me some things to look at and I worked through those suggestions. A short time after that my starter motor failed and when I got the car home and the starter removed I found a chunk of metal stuck in the teeth of the starter. Well after I took care of the starter issue I took the car to Spectrum Motorsports and they pulled the transmission and found that the Competition Clutch FAILED.
This is a Stage 4 Competition Clutch and some of the teeth that hold the retaining ring in place broke off. This caused the clutch to not engage or disengage from the flywheel properly. The chunks of metal were identical to the chunk that was found in the starter. The failure of this clutch broke the starter and damaged the flywheel.
Ok here is where I get a bit upset. After making these findings I contacted Competition Clutch about the issue and I supplied pictures. They stated show proof of purchase and we will address the issue. I did ask for an itemized list of what would be replaced but I never received a response. Due to the fact that the clutch was purchased through Spectrum Motorsports they stepped in and took the damaged clutch out to Competition Clutch. I finally called Competition Clutch and asked what all would be replaced and they said only the parts purchased from Competition Clutch.
Wrong answer in my book! They sold a product that failed and it damaged a brand new flywheel that was purchased and installed at the same time as the clutch. The damage to the flywheel is a direct effect of the clutch failing. In fact the failure of the clutch also caused the destruction of my starter. Although I was not looking for Competition Clutch to reimburse me for the starter I would have thought that they would step up and replace the flywheel as their product caused the damage.
A stock replacement for the flywheel is $59 and some change, not that I was expecting them to give me one of their really nice flywheels but I feel that they should cover the cost of the replacement. Their decision to take this stance on this issue is a huge failure just like the clutch was. They should have made this right. If the clutch had not failed I would not be out $101 for the new starter and now another $59 for a new flywheel. So rather than their clutch costing me $395 in the end it will have cost me about $555.
That is a big fat FAIL for Competition Clutch!
The next time I have to purchase a clutch for this car it will not be from Competition Clutch. I guess I have learned two lessons:
- When you buy a clutch buy a complete clutch kit all from the same company.
- When you buy a clutch don't buy a Competition Clutch.
So much for trying to spend my money with a local company here in Georgia
