The ring gear on the fly wheel could be missing teeth or the start drive gear could be missing teeth. The solinoid that engages the start could be getting stuck. Or, my friend has this problem, his starter is loose and when he starts the car it makes a high pitch vibrating sound. Sorta sounds like that game "Operation". But all and in all i would agree with you its some sorta starter problem.
