I'm having the same difficulties with a shop right now. Unfortunately, since my car wouldn't make it to another shop I had to leave it where it is. The mechanic told me that the shaft for my clutch master cylinder is broken, so he wanted to replace that AND my clutch at the same time, along with my slave cylinder and the estimate was going to be somewhere around $1100-$1200. I drove down there in the rental and asked for proof that every bit of that went out w/o any warning at all because I didn't believe them. I wanted to see exactly what was broken on my car, including the clutch. I informed him that the clutch never slipped and it grabbed before even halfway up, so there was no way my clutch went bad in 1 hour. The tech then told me, "well, maybe your clutch doesn't need to be replaced. I can't look at it w/o taking the other parts off, so um.....um....." I laughed and told him to only replace the master cylinder and slave cylinder. Then he tried to let me know that I have 2 oil leaks. I said, "let me guess--front cover and oil pan gasket? And NO--don't fix those." He looked so surprised when I informed him that they only start to seap after about 2000 miles after an oil change, but I check my oil once a week, and change my own oil with full synthetic and a Nissan filter every 3000 miles. I love dealing with mechanics!
If it weren't for you guys and the guys on www.midwest240sx.com, I would probably be spending about $1100 to get my car out of the shop tomorrow. Thank you all for your ideas and tips for what went wrong with my clutch.
