Yeah, this is All-Grain Brewing. You have to steep the grains to get the sugar out of them. This becomes the Wort. Then you boil the Wort with Hops. Then cool it down and put it in the fermenter.

The one step method is to get DME or LME. Basically a company malts the grains then dehydrates it to a liquid(syrup) or powder. You add it to boiling water and it becomes your wort.
