Chance, you cannot tell if your car is a factory auto or manual tranny from the VIN.  But, you can tell what type of tranny is factory on the Model ID plate, located under the hood on the passenger side firewall.  If the 7th digit is an F, you have a factory auto tranny.  If the 7th digit is an A, you have a factory manual tranny.  I just found the file at www.240sx.org under FAQ, then VIN Number Identification.  At the bottom, there is a link to click for "Rich Bjornson's killer .pdf document S-14 Model ID.pdf."  It takes a while to load sometimes, but it's worth it (at least I think so anyway).  I wonder if any mechanic is going to look at the Model ID plate to see if your tranny is factory or not.  The things that make ya go hmmmm....
