Redrilling Wheels

Ok, so I was flipping my sign today and I was thinking about 5x114.3 wheels and how cool they usually are. Then the thought crossed my mind, what if you could re-drill a wheel? Well... can you? I know how a wheel is subjected to much stress, but there are plenty of dual-pattern wheels out there. I'm guessing it would depend on the thickness of the mating surface and general strength of the wheel's material. Can anyone shed some light on this subject?
