It will make it very easier if you can find a digital multimeter (DMM). Just test the circuit you want to tap into...when you turn the lights on, your DMM should read about 12 DCvolts. When its off, it will read approx zero. That should be for your illumination as stated above.For your main power you just want a 12 volt switched signal signal (if your guage s electronic). If your guage just has a nipple on the back of the guage, its mechanical and will probably only have two wires (power from your light source and ground) .
