Well i believe its there to help keep the chain from entirely binding up from not enough slack. Obviously this thing did its job.
Id imagine if that wasn't there, the chain would have probably started touching the other side. But yeah it's been a couple years since i built my motor and it may have a roller on it but i dont recall anything that goes on that prong.
