Cam gears are to dial in the cams for performance purposes and to extract every last up out of the engine. Without having them(the cams) "dialed" in you aren't going to hurt anything. It requires a dial indicator and/or multiple passes on a dyno, moving the gears in small increments at a time to find the sweet spot.

If I were you, I'd drop the cams in and roll with it. Lots of people do the staggered cam. Obviously, you'd net more gains with cam gears and being able to find the best position for the cams. If this is a mild setup, I wouldn't worry about it.
