Not so...

If you pull your ring gear, swap the open unit for a VLSD, and put it back together with every shim in the exact same spot...no problems.

MANY, MANY people have installed KAAZ diffs in this manner...not even an OEM part...and have not had to reshim, as the backlash and stuff has been in spec after the install.

I have installed a VLSD into an open diff housing with no ill effect in over 12,000 miles...

As you pull everything apart, lable and keep it in order...then put it back EXACTLY as it was...you'll have no issue.

Now, it's still a PITA, but do-able.
