I don't think going over 255's in front does any benefits aside from braking distance decrase on street tires for S-chassis, just from my own observations here. (sort of putting on the flame suit on. Note that this is purely for front tire size)
When I had 17's, i ran 225/45/17's front with 245 or 255/40 17's in rear, very good combo(this is before I decided I wanted to try that max tire things) and ran that setup or similar to it for nearly 5 years and many different tire brands/models.
Now that I've got the 18's for few years, I've gone through 3 different sizes just in front on my S14 on same wheels and kept the same rear tires.(F:18x9.5+15 R:18x10+38 RPF1's)
245/40/18 to 235/40/18, now on 255/35/18's(RE760) front and rear's are 275/35/18's(RE-05).
I really can't tell much of a front end lateral grip difference from 235 to 255(side note, yes better tire compound will fix the actual amount of grip issue), but what I do notice is that 255's mute out the first initial turn-in inputs, like I feel like the car hasn't fully gripped yet for first split second then it provides the feed back and feels(All of the feels). the normal snappy steering that I've known my car to have with 225's or 235's were gone with 255's in front.
Then again, take it for what it is as everyone has different suspension and alignment setup. I mean..I only went for big tires because of this damn thread. LOL
