I was right there with you a long time ago but there really are some decent animes out there. You just have to give them a chance I think.
I was all about old 90's japanimation with mecha and guts but it got old. Akira is awesome sure, Gundam is too, but the new stuff is interesting because it's so mind-jogging. Really gets you thinking. I'm not sure of any mech stuff out there, but as far as what you're looking for Attack on Titan might be it.
And if you're gonna talk 90s, Dragonball was 10x better than DBZ by any means (even though it was 80's we didn't get it for awhile).
The beginning of DBZ was a'ight.
Also, don't laugh but as far as the newest stuff I've seen... Yuri Yuri is good...
