It's possible, I know, however I have a hard time thinking the gears in the pump were binding, let alone enough to cause the pump to short out. Honestly in my experience I haven't ever heard of it.
Definitely update with what happens after the pump swap, but make sure if you dick or tinker with anything between now and then, you update the situation.
