take castle nut, turn upside down and half-thread it onto the tie rod shank. thread it enough so its not just on by a couple threads, but dont let the tie rod shank threads get exposed so they won't get fucked up. then hit away
if its an old tie rod, go midevil on that bitch without hte castle nut trick.
