They aren't necessary and cause more harm than good. In addition to what's been said, I'd just remove them once you've got the valve cover off, regardless.

There are 2 of them for the upper timing chain, one on top one on the side.
Per TSB I don't even install them when I do rebuilds.

Yes, there is a way to actually test the oil pressure. In the FSM (Factory Service Manual)
