stock ECU? haven't had to deal with that in a long long time but you need to lock the timing (may have been as simple as unplugging TPS but check the factory service manual.) Once the ECU locks timing it won't jump around when you use the timing light.

Same exact process on standalone ECU's you just lock the timing at the value of choice in the software for the timing sync.
