If your opening it up to check for the timing noise, its pretty easy.
The chain guide sits on top of the ka24e, held together by a couple of bolts. Regardless if its cracked or not, simply remove it.
While you have the valve cover off, you might want to check your rocker arms, the cam, and everything else. Look for wear, burn mark, and any white residue. If you got some white residue/marks, it means that you've good coolant leaking, or the head gasket is going soon.
Once you are done, clean off the mating surfaces, put the rubber gasket back on, squirt a little make a gasket on it, and tighten the bolts back up. The FSM has the torque sequence and lbs of torque to use.
Good luck!
