my timing chain started doing that too, first it would just rattle at startup, then just recently right before i replaced it it rattled at 3k too. My advice would be to do the timing chain job yourself as it can only get worse, it takes a good weekend but you save lots of money over taking it to a shop. if theres any problems after that then check the oil pressure and replace the oil pump.
