They did indeed , It was their first twin cam 4 cylinder. Before the FJ the only other Twin Cam Nissan had built, was the S20 2 liter 6 cylinder, installed in the Fairlady Z 432 and Skyline GTR of 1970 -76 vintages.
It was roughly the same time Toyota was playing with their first Twin Cam 4 's as well the 2TG and 3TG. Yes,Toyota also built Twin Cam 6 2 liter as well, that was in the S2000, in the late sixties, of course, this was with the help of Yamaha technology.
