Well, here we go again! Such a common problem...
OK, its my experience that the culprit is the digital speedometer controller - its a sub-component of the whole cluster and can be removed independently. It also controls the HUD and the odometer. I'm not certain about the specifics, but it appears to give feedback to the ECU and causes the RPM cut-off if no speed is registering, ie. speedo failing. Some people claim that by re-soldering the multitude of joints on the speedo board, the problem will be fixed. My experience is that won't fix it. I tinkered with mine for a couple months, tried lots of stuff, but nothing seemed to work. There are just TOO many things it could be and I couldn't isolate the problem. I think you can by the speedometer controller unit separately, 'bout $275 from Courtesy Nissan. I just went to the analog cluster and bagged the HUD and digital display. Good luck!
