if i go junkyard to build a turbo setup, can a stoc turbo with an internal wastegate be converted to use an external one?
if so, how? i would like to have the ability to "clock" the housings for custom piping thanks Sean

Yes you can block off the internal wastegate to run an external...
Basically just modify the actuator or lock it open. External WG flow better and allow for control at higher boost levels.

yes turbos can be clocked. but i must ask why a junk yard turbo if you plan on going through the extra work for an external waste gate you money would be beter spent on a good turbo imo

ok, before this gets too painful, i am going to just add that this is an information gathering session, i am looking at the possibilities of building a setup slowly, and upgrading it, mainly because i am a poor bastard, and cannot afford to do what i realy want to all at once
time i have labor, and tinkering i can do cash is relatively tight through school basically i want to be sure of where i am going before i leap in and buy a second block to build and work with....

Most companies sell a plate looking thing to block off the internal actuator, and it has a flange on it for an external gate.
I still don't see why though? An external gate, a good one, will run you no less than $200. That could be about twice as much as you paid for your turbo. I would just stick with the stock internal actuator, unless you have some plans that I'm not understanding... -Jeff

Jeff- well the thing is that many times the actuator on a stock internal WG will fail or fluctuate. At high boost levels the actuator may malfunction and not allow you to hit the desired boost or sometimes you may spike.
HKS sells actuator upgrades for may stock turbo'd cars. They have one for the SR which flows better which allows for more boost and consistant boost.

maximum boost - corky bell
-I am thinkin about doing the same thing you are. I figure I can pick up a T3 from a Turbo Coupe, or a t3/t4 from a GN. and get a custome flange made to block the internal wastegate opening. (I'm pretty sure there are some companies making them) then connect my ext. wastegate to the exhaust mani. Will save me a lot of money buying a turbo, and be more reliable than using the internal wastegate of a 15yr old turbo.

boost.</td></tr></table><span id='postcolor'> Yeah... I understand this, but he is talking about a small turbo, junkyard style. A t3 will blow hot in our cars at 10 or 12 psi at redline... unless I did funny math. That just doesn't seem like the "high boost" he should be wary of. Stock z31 t3's are rated to 14 psi, and many people run that stock on their 300's. That and I wouldn't want a 10 year old turbo trying to push 20 psi in my car. -Jeff

Thats what I am trying to say. If he's on a budget, why should he spend $50 for a removal plate and nearly $200 for a external wastegate if he's not going to boost high. Shit.. without about $2k in fuel and intercoolers, you can't even hit 8psi in a ka24de. Save the $250+ for something better, like a start to a fuel system, or gauges that you thought you could get away without... I figure to keep tabs.. I need 5 gauges.

AHAHAH Jeff ok ok I get what you are saying man...true he still has to buy an external WG as well as the labor on the internal one....ok brain fart on my part.
Man my FD looked like a plane cockpit with all the damn flashing lights I had. I feel you man...that's the down side of really boostin a turbo. I was always paranoid about my A/F btw never use the autometer one it just a pretty flashy thinggy... The Tomei one is pretty good not sure if my 240sx will warrant one but you never know. Figure I won't be pushing more than a bar on the SR so an EGT should be fine.
