Special Tool For Shims (PICS)
Any of you who have rebuilt an SR head have taken the Shims Under the Rocker arms on and off. The most common thing to do is to keep the shims in seperate bags to make sure they back onto the same cylinder (side Intake or exhaust) they came off of.
Alot of people DONT know, that after getting common preventive machine work (new valves, seals, seats) can change the total heigth of the valve. Wear to more aggresive cams also come into play when not properly reshiming. Aerodyne in Garden Grove, CA built lukes (customer) last engine, and did not shim it properly, causing all the rocker arms to drop off, grind up the cams, and destroy an entire engine. For some time here, we have been using a Kent More replica setup that i made, which is basically a plate with some holes drilled in it to sit ontop of the cam cap holes, to use a magnetic base dial indicator to get the measurements. As good as this setup has been, i still feel it did not deliver the accuracy that I personally desired. So after seeing some pictures in the FSM of the OEM valve height dial indicator, and some fab work from some FWD DE heads on SR forums, we made this bad boy last night. This is how it seats in the engine to take measurements from the shims/rocker arm guide. So, if you are in need of Full head service, porting, rechamber, valve upgrades, springs install etc, but do not have the resources locally, we can now mail order full heads, pre shimmed for your use. I can now get the clearance down to .0001 mm using our new tool. Check out my blog to see some of the custom work we get done. Big thanks to brian for fabricating the Tool! John [email protected]
