Anyone ever experience an oil leak with their ka24de? I got an oil leak and i wanna take care of that before i get too excited over buying things to make my car go faster. My best guess was that the seal around the oil pan is messed up because the oil pan is all covered with oil.

Hmmm it could be, but it could be a lot of other things leaking instead.
Check the Oil Pressure Switch/Sensor (they fail a lot on Nissans) and the Front Crank Seal.

I had the same prob with my 95 first it was the oil pan gasket I got that fixed but it was still leaking oil,it turned out to be the seal between the engine and tranny

My other mechanic then recommened the first one be shot <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/lookaround.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':look:'> It's a cheap gasket, but a pain to replace. Does anyone have experience with taking off the oil pan? I'd like a few pointers because i'm gonna plan on putting a new seal on it. I thought it was a gasket so i went to the nissan dealer to ask about it and the guy there said that the KA24DE has a silicone seal.

what yosho said would be the first things i would look at those are more problematic than a rear seal. next thing i would look at is the front cover.
but since you said your oil pan is soaked look at your crank seal and O.P.S.

The crank seal is between the transmission and engine correct? And could it be possible that it's leaking from the lower pulley? because that was wet too.

the crank seal is covered by the crank pulley. you must remove your belts the remove the pulley and you will see the crank seal. pry it out using a flat head screw driver and clean off hte area with some brake clean and put hte new one in using a rubber mallet till its flat with the surface. <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/thumbs-up.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':thumbsup:'>
im not good at explaining maybe someone can provide more info if mine is a lil confusing.

First task in troubleshooting anything is finding out exactly what your problem is. See where it's leaking from, then fix it. There aren't too many places for oil to leak from: valve cover, front main seal, rear main seal, and oil pan are the main ones. I don't know about the oil pressure sensor, but I'll need to take a look at that to fix my own leak :-)

Ok, i understood what camppain said. Only thing to do now is to do it. I'll probably start off putting a new layer of silicone for the oil pan and i might as well put in a new crank seal.

In general, everything that leaks flows down and back on an engine. So if your Front Crank Seal is leaking, it'll just leak all over the oil pan and look like the oil pan is leaking. Same is true of the front cover or even valve covers. You have to trace the leak back to it's source. This isn't always possible on a dirty engine. Nissan hit's this hard in their tech training material. It's called Masking... where one problem looks like something else and in fact, may be several problems.
Before you make any repairs, I'd suggest you fully clean the engine off... spending an hour cleaning the engine is better than replacing parts that don't need replacement yet. Not only will you find the true cause of your leak, but you may find other things you'll need to replace and if nothing else, you'll have a nice clean engine and be able to notice when something new starts to leak. You can use an engine degreaser... that's probably the easiest. When I worked at a Nissan dealership, we all used brake cleaner to clean off all that garbage... but we had unlimited amounts of it and it wasn't used as a spray (like you'll get in a can at an Auto Parts store) so you'll probably want to stick with the normal degreasers.

I already did clean it in hopes to trace the source but the only problem was that it was very hard to clean off all the oil from the front of the oil pan. I assume the reason for this is that the front crank is what is leaking so more layers of oil were sticking to the front side of the oil pan. Another problem is i need an oil change soon so i'll try the front crank seal and hope for the best. Thanks all

If you look up between the crank pully and the block you'll see the seal. If there's oil on the seal... if it's wet, then it's your front crank seal that's leaking. Without seeing the car, that would be my guess.

How hard is it to change the seal myself? From what i've heard the biggest problem would be to make sure the timing is correct after i put the pulley back. Anyone have experience with changing the front crank seal?
