Why again are you trying to get it out? Either a shop press or a BFH (big friggin hammer). my contol arm ball joints came out with some heat and a BFH

Just use a hammer, and hit the knuckle thats holdin it on a few good times. Make sure you have the nut on the end, just incase you suck, and you miss. No one likes mushroomed ends.

CliffNotes: Bang the fuck outta the knuckle.

you are retarded.

a tie rod end is a ball joint.

its just a specific name for that ball joint

you are suppose to get it out with a ball joint puller

it wedges on beneath the steering knuckle and theres a bolt ontop that you turn on that pushes on the top of the ball joint,
which pops it out of the knuckle.
dont be a retard like all these other guys, use the proper tool for the job, dont micky mouse it like all these retards are telling you to do.

you are kidding me right? his first post was kind of confusing i didnt know if he meant that the end of the tie rod was stuck in the knuckle or if he was trying to replace the "ball joint" on the tie rod itself, u should read more carefully, also i am a mechanic by trade and i have never seen anyone nor myself waste our time with a ball joint puller, all you need is a big hammer and beat the knuckle right where the tie rod goes but not on the tie rod itself and it works everytime

Pickle forks tear the boot to hell, ruining the joint.

Hammering from the top crowns the top of the stud, ruining the joint.

Use a proper removal tool, or hit the spindle to induce shock to loosen it, but odds are it's not going to be enough.

Pickle forks are great if you have absolutely no plans to reuse the ball joint you're removing, or at least are planning to replace the boot. You'll trash the boot for sure. But if you're planning to put a new one in there anyway, go for it. Hammer on one hard enough, and you can get out a ball joint that's hasn't been taken apart for thirty years.

Just be sure to get a one piece pickle fork - some of them have a head welded on to a handle, and you can break the welds with some good hammering. Been there, done that.

However, if you need to reuse that tie rod end, a good screw-type puller is definitely the way to go. That'll pop the rod out without damaging anything.

Remove the cotter pin
uncrew the nut completly
add some penetrating oil
Put the nut back, with crown facing down just a couple of threads
Hit the nut as hard as you can

When reinstalling, add some antiseize.
Do NOT HEAT or hammer the rod itself
