![]() Hey you guys.
Im building a race/street car for my project and i was wondering what kind of setting i should use for my cam gear? How much i should retard it, or advance it? Internal Modds: Sr20 black top brian crower cams 272s intake/exhaust brian crower springs brian crower retainers Greddy rocker arm stopper cometic headgasket arp main head bolt Stock block External modds: ebay manifold SSAC Gt28rs turbo Greddy fmic koyo rad Apexi filter full turbo back "Gp sport" some 500+cc injectors "forgot" This is my first build ever with internals, because i wanted a little more power for the weekend fun.:-) But basically i was planning to run a AEM wide band, safc for a computer. What other things should i worry about from some of ur guys mistake, for your very first time? How much power can i put down from this setup? |

Usually when we talk about building the internals, it's pistons/rods/crank - you're building the head (which is still great). Those are some big cams, and should make great hp up top, assuming you've got an intake mani (Greddy and Jun are the top names, look to spend $450 or so on a genuine Greddy). With a GT28RS at boost (18lbs or so), look to get close to 350whp on aggressive tune, 330whp or so with a decent tune. Not sure when your injectors will max out, but it should be right about that same range. Turbo's still gonna spool before 3500, so it should be a tons-o-fun. My best advice would be to budget for better engine management, something along the lines of a powerFC/AEM EMS/MAP-ECU2 (if you can find someone to tune it, look for Supra shops)... SAFC's are for hack job tunes.

if your going to spend all that cash on the build...definately go standalone, since A/F ratios arent going to be that much help without an ignition map as well. Id definatley go with a PFC or something similar.

great advice. power fc/commander setup is only half the battle get the dattaloggit($375) roughly to complete the setup as well. question 4 the gurus. with a gt28rs and such big cams wont the turbo fall of sooner due 2 the ar housing being the choke point. just a concern that ran thru my mind.

Where did you source the GT28RS from? Specs?
Safc is not going to cut it. Get: Greddy Emanage Ultimate, AEM FIC, AEM EMS, Haltech, Motech, Dont get power FC. Haltech is less expensive than motech and AEM, Emanage and FIC are about $500. You get less options with these though. Also scrap the cometic head gasket if you can as well, get the Power Enterprises gasket, or the mysterious APEXi headgasket. APEXi is a hard find now a days, but it is worth 20x its weight in gold. That is why i need the specs and manufacture of it. It should kill low end more than anything IMHO.

The turbo is a garrett .60 AR compressor wheel.
KK, thanks for the info..I guess im gonan go with piston too, but nothing crazy like a fully built block. I was thinking Je piston, and a boring/honing job. That should do the job for internals?? But right now i think for my managment system is just gonan be safc. DON'T have that extra cash for stand alone. I could get the AEM unit, but i would rather built the engine first just so i don't have to pull it out again in the future. DAMN I wish it was a little easier!! HAHA |

OOO yeah wats up with this mysterious APEXi head gasket?? Never herd of it?? Also my other question is, what kind of piston is good for this setup since im changing the cams, like a different compression ratio?? Or NO Difference?? GOsh im soo Newbie at this internal CRAP!

Looking back on it the Cometic will suffice in a pinch. But I would not reccomend it for someone with aspirations of more than 350whp range and high boost. The HG is not made very well. It does not line up perfectly with dowell on block deck and also does not have a service tab in the front of it (so you can remove the front cover oil pump assembly without screwing up the hg itself).
But like I said in a pinch it will work. Power FC is better than anything in its price range. If you can source one for 600-700 bucks with software thats a steal. Otherwise for 1450 or so you can have a haltech EMS which is also 'worth its wieght in gold' or whatver. The Comprssor AR is not the wheel size or trim. That is the specification that is needed to determine the appropriate compressor map and then can be used to determine estimates of power and torque output in the RPM range based on CFM rates of flow and displacment of said engine/setup. cheers

do you already have those items or are you planning to buy them?
i'd add fuel pump and stronger clutch to the list if you don't already have them, and depending on which ems you get, you may or may not need a maf (z32 or anything better than stock) and not sure about the ebay manifolds, sure people say it may not crack and stuff, but i haven't seen it do better than stock, unless someone can post up anything that shows increase in anything? if you don't already have, get all larger pipings, from turbo elbow, downpipe to cat (or test pipe, get a cat, trees will love you)... |
