erratic and small spark on spark plugs

I was testing spark plug with a friend. I had my friend hold the spark plug against engine by holding ignition wire and I was standing by driver side door turning the ignition key.

In the process of cranking, I, from the driver side door, saw spark light only twice while my friend claims that he saw sparks everytime I cranked though the sparks were very small. So it seems that spark sizes are erratic and small.

Does this indicate ignition coil malfunction or ignition wire is poorly connected? I have duralast ignition wires.
