I'm on the east coast of canada, where if you don't know, we do not have to worry about smog and as far as i know allowed to not have a catalyc converter on any car made before 1991. that being said i have a 90 240 coupe and need to replace my current cat. would i gain horsepower by removing it and putting in straight pipe or would i be better off purchasing a high flow cat. if i put in pipe how loud will it be??would it backfire???

As far as I have heard, it is a horrible idea to remove the cat on our cars.
One of the biggest complaints is that is smells like rotten eggs. And I have heard that it makes our little 2.4's sound like a tractor. Not a pretty thing to do to a 240sx, IMO. -Jeff |

In the UK we take out the cats and replace them with straights. If you pair this with a 75mm downpipe and a large bore exhaust it makes more pops and burbles but you get extra HP and also you can shoot flames out of the tailpipe on overrun and sometimes on gear changes! This is obviously on the SR20det engine and not the 2.4 n/a motor you guys have. Would not have thought it would have any detrimental effect on yours tho?

Yes, its really not a good idea to get rid of your cat, unless it is a car with forced air induction, loss of backpressure, your car runs wierd on account of your sensor (fogot which one isback there) and it sounds like crap

i dont know about yall but i heard good thing about pdm's down pipe. it's pretty a straight pipe that replaces the cat. i've never actually experience it myself, but im thinking about doing it soon. a lot of ppl said that they can feel more power at high rpm, and not losing any power at low rpm.
