SR20 problems (video)
After a year or so of sitting, I decided to fire up the 240 and begin to evaluate my situation. Shortly after installing my Rocker arm stoppers there begin this ticking/clicking noise between 2500-4000 rpms. I pulled the valve cover and everything appeared to be ok. Any guesses as to whats going on, where to start investigating? I know the turbo is pretty much shot and have a replacement waitin g to go on. Heres a video of it running I made earlier, hopefully it works.
Thanks. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dq3gAqt45kU

owe, owe owe
i hate when sr's make that noise. So this noise did not exis at all until after you installed your RAS? Could be a shim that fell off its perch on one of the valves on one of the cylinders and now you have on cylinder (rocker arm) cock eyed but the motor will still run but its just jammed in the hole (makes the valve on one cyl not open all the way) happened to me. Precision and care needs to be taken with modification to hydrolic valve train like this, sounds like you lost a shim or perch etc. Did you make sure you turned the crank/engine over by hand after installing them with the valve cover off to see if the ras tabs (on top of each rocker arm) were rubbing on the cam lobs? If you bent the ras (cheap material) it could be a possiblity and it would chew your cam to sht. I mean other than that ... .... Sounds like oil pressure is off, or it was off and now you have metal on metal contact. You need to try to narrow down if its bottom end or top end noise. Use a stethiscope or just common sense or even a screw driver put your ear to it (it will be louder in certain areas). 1. timing chain slappage (thanks to low oil pressure or even wear or slack). 2. Rod Bearing Failure. owe

ugh..that sucks.
everything i can think of was covered already. last time i heard that sound 2 revs later it multiplied by 20 times as the valve train ate itself.. buddy slung a shim.. he didnt know what it was.. as i was walking up to the car i was like oh shit that sucks.. and he reved it up again and it slung the rocker arm.. all hell broke loose then.. 3 rockers fucked, couple shims in the oil pan, others hanging out in all the wrong places in the head and exhaust cam had about 2 lobes... missing.. it wasnt pretty. I suggest not starting it back up until you have found the problem and fix it or it could be a lot worse if its not already beyond repair. |

Pretty much sums it up. I love that car, but I don't know if I can justify dropping 1500+ on a shortblock. ![]() ![]()

Pulled the RAS today and that unfortunatley wasn't the culprit. looks like a new short block may be in order. Thanks everyone for the help.

could possibly be a knocking rod, which i have had well over my fair share. being that the sr is veiry oil needy, having it sit 4 a year and starting it up, might have very little oil left, which has always been the cause of that for me. if thats the case, that sucks balls, but i am pretty sure you can get a short block 4 close 2 a grand somewhere. hopefully its something stupid small that you can laugh at
