MAF location???

to start off let me say i've tried searching....
anywho....

i have a red top sr20 and im gonna swap the stock maf for a z32 tt maf.
no big deal....

however i was thinking about how to get rid of all that stock rubber intake crap and make my own....but no matter what i do im still gonna have the maf before the tubo right????

well i got to thinking and with the help of a couple of other people i have come up with an alternative.....

ive HEARD that this has been done before but i rather get as much info i can before i start cutting and making things fit....

having said that...
i was just wondering if you can get a z32 tt maf and instead of putting it on the intake side of the turbo (where air is flowing into it), put the maf on the cold pipe after the intercooler but before the throtle body.
i heard that is the stock location on the z32 tt and you get a more accurate reading.

any opinions???

if you put your maf there, how is your car going to know the amount of air being sucked in? i've seen people put their blow-off valve at the cold pipe though - before throttle body.

you need the MAF on the intake. i've never seen or heard of anyone putting the MAF on the cold pipe. i'm not saying that it can't be done. if you're thinking about relocating the MAF, you might as well get a standalone and go with a MAP setup.

the Z32 MAF location is still Before the turbos at the Air Box like all other Vehicals
Ive seen the Blow-Thru set up done on RB's for the Skylines it works you just gotta make sure its air tight.

I was thinking about doing this on mine but using the stock SR Maf and having a special plate welded on the cold pipe so I can Bolt on my MAF like the stock one.

ok- I ran blowthrough for a long time - no issues - just had to tune for it... It works to allow you to run the bov before the maf so venting it doesnt make the car act stupid. people all over the world do it - there are drawbacks...

1) the plastic mafs asplode on high boost.
2) you gotta retun for the setup and moving the maf by even rotating it in the couplers requires a retune - i swear i rotated it like 30 degrees and it changed things a lot.
3)some people have had spikes with the blowthrough setups - lean spikes - i didnt but others have


now koguchi, and nomuken both have used blowthrough and had success...

its all about you getting tuned for it (i was actually very happy with it) I only changed from it because my ic piping is too short to have a place for it now.

im running blowthrough on my ka-t. between the intercooler and throttle body. i havent started it up yet but ive heard its better than before the turbo. but yea im not running more than 10 lbs of boost. im using an n60 maxima maf.... it seems like it will work pretty good but we'll see when i do a boost leak test later

but on my ca its before the turbo (stock)

its only better if u get tuned WITH IT. If you think ur gonna move ur maf - and have it just plain work - ur gonna hurt something.

i never heard anything about "building the maf" but i have seen guys JB weld the shit outta them, and put zipties around em and shit - its all ugly lookin and gay.

like i said before - i was happy with it (broke a maf on 22psi btw then did the ziptie thing and didnt break again on 18psi daily tho) the only reason i took it off is i went short route/v mounted, and then when that intercooler had a endtank crack, i went midmount and theres still no place to put it on the cold side.

This is how i did mine. I still have to seal the maf with urethane than either zip or use hose clamps around the maf so it doesnt explode under boost. p.s im tuning with power fc/datalogit

It definiteley works, just make sure the maf can handle the boost pressure. it gives you a much better reading, especially if you have an atmospheric blow off valve. Also, If your driving down the highway in the middle of the desert and your coupler on your hotpipe decides to melt and pop off, your engine wont die like mine did. Major thing is making it airtight though. Good luck, and maybe when your done post up a guide with pictures so that anyone else wanting to do this can.

when u blow off a pipe the car will still sputter because of air turbulance... just like if u dont run a air filter on your maf - the car wont idle proper unless you shield off the area around the maf (the fan will screw stuff up pretty bad)

Well reason you need a tune is because the ECU is calibrated a certain way. It takes the signal a certain amount of time to get to the ECU, process that data and then make the fuel correction in according to the air coming into the engine. Now that the maf is closer to the TB, the ECU doesnt have the same amount of time to process that data and make that correction. This is where tuning comes to play to make up for it. Theres a certain distance that the maf have to be from the TB whre the ECU can still compensate for it, just cant remember the distance exactly.

Anyways people already stated the issues that you can run into running a blow thru setup. The other thing that nobody has brought up is the chance that if your turbo goes doo-doo and starts spitting oil into the charged side, theres a good chance that the oil will fuck up your maf too. So keep that in mind.

That's exactly right. Turbos blow oil, it's what they do. To a certain extent, it's healthy (just talk to your local rotary tuner). MAFS' hate oil.

The other thing is that MAFS are generally not 3" diameter, like most coldpipes. Hotpipes are smaller diameter because you want the air to move quickly to the intercooler, then slow down to get cooled, then have a nice relaxing trip in to the throttle body. Extra speed bumps are not ideal.

If you're getting a standalone to tune for your blow-through MAF, just go MAP. If you're just gonna get an AFC, no data logging, and hope for the best, at least you're staying cost effective...
