interest in over rails?
A friend of mine who just bought a 240 was looking around for frame rails, and he found a site that makes "over rails" for the old z cars. They said they might be looking into making them for 240sx's when he emailed them, but they want to see if there's any interest out there first. Post up here if your interested and I'll link them to this thread to show that there's interest.
Their site is: www.baddogparts.com |

it would definetly save a lot of "rust cancer" 240's, not only that but its a stiffer subframe than the stock one is so you'd notice a lil gain in ur overall chassis rigidity

ok well i just happen to be that "friend." My original problem is that I have a hole in my frame rail on the passenger side that is about the size of a golfball i would say, and I cannot stand rust. So i just ordered a new set of rails for both sides, even though i only needed the one, just to be safe, and I have now contacted John at baddogparts.com about making a set of over rails just to make sure i never have this problem again. My plan is to replace the stock ones, put on the over rails, fill it with chassis stiffening foam, and seal it up with some rust preventive coating and hopefully never have to worry about them again. Overkill? Maybe. I just cant stand rust.

I wish it was just that easy. I am in the process of buying a winter car as well because the 240 is my only means of transportation right now and I really dont want to winter it. I just want to fix this because its basically the only thing that needs attention on the car, the rest is basically perfect.
I ordered them from midwaypartsteam.com. 90.71 shipped for both. Nissan part # 75171-53F00 for the drivers side and passenger side is 75172-53F00 i believe. They call them extensions and not rails. |

That would be great if they did start reproducing.. or replicating the nissan frame rails. There would deffinatly be demand from the eastern Canada guys. They salt the shit out of the roads there in the winter and those cars really suffer.
Though you still may be able to get the frame rails through some places, they are infact discontinued. Some dealers will still try to get some in (that are still kicking around) but alot will just tell you that it is a discountinued part..tough luck.

Well when I ordered them it said nothing about being discontinued or anything like that, so i guess ill just have to keep my fingers crossed and hope that they still have some. If not ill just patch the spot and then do the over rails.

Snap some pics when you put them on, will you?
I don't know why, but I have never heard of ordering frame rails before. Seems like it would be common with the problems with rust 240's have. I'd like to see what this is all about.

Looking at his other products, they should be pretty reasonable. The other rails he makes are 65 a side. Pretty damn cheap in my book especially if it can save a car.

so how do you exactly install these? do you have to remove everything from your chassis?? or do you just cut and weld?? do you have to worry about the actual car being lop-sided or anything??

eh, depends. granted the custom work will be stronger....i've seen fixed frame rails go for 100 bucks for a patch job. ...but again...its all about where you go, and who you are.

Just because there is one big hole does not make both frame rails bad. Seriously, it takes 20 minutes to cut out a piece of steel and weld it into the hole. Buying new frame rails seems dumb to me. I think NemeGuero said it first, go to a custom fab shop. Cheapest and easiest fix.
And usually when there is one hole; there are more.

Ok i know that the one rail is fine, but for 40 bux a piece, im just gonna do both and not have to worry about it. From what I can tell all i will have to do is grind/drill out the spot welds and weld the new ones in. I could be wrong, but i guess ill find out when I get to doing it. Im pretty sure I can figure it out. The hole I have isnt even that big, like 1.5 in round approximately. I just want it to be fixed for good and not have to worrk about it.

Yea ill take some pics and probably do a write up of the whole process. Im just doing both of the front rails. One quick question tho, apparently there was a leaky master cylinder at one time, and it ate away some of the paint on the firewall, rail, and wheel well right under it. The rail has some very minor surface rust and the firewall is still clean, but the well right there is pretty well rusted. Is it possible to buy and replace that section? i searched online where i ordered my rails and could find the front half of the well but not the back. im thinkin im just going to half to cut a good one out of the yard.
