Rear axels won't spin after Z32 Upright install
I just installed the Z32 uprights, along with the brakes on my S13 hatch and when I went to tighten down the axel nut, I realized I could not spin the hub or axel at all, it was really hard. When I loosened the nut, I was able too spin it. Any suggestion?
I've noticed from a few write ups also that people install the ebrake assembly and uprights THEN put the hub on, after the other stuff is bolted onto the chassis. The way I did it was I put the hub,ebrake assembly, and uprights all at one time. I dunno if that might be the issue? What I don't get is how do they install the Z32 hub because mine has the tabs as shown in the second picture which I got from here. ![]() ![]() |

Thats the way I did it, I put the hubs on the backing plate, than reassembled the shoes and the equipment for the ebrake shoes. So with the hub, backing plate, and ebrake hardware, I mounted it all in. I believe my tab, from the hub touches the backing plate, then I put the pin thing where the shoes hang onto. I tightened up the 4 bolts that hold the hub in the back, then the big 27mm iirc bolt on the back. From there I slid it into my axels.
I think I was going to cut off the tabs but was worried about the bolt shown in this pic, not being able to be threaded all the way. ![]() |

Ok this is what you do:
![]() TABED HUB'S CAN ONLY USE THE ANCHOR BLOCK BOLT ON THE LEFT PERIOD! NON-TABED HUBS CAN USE THE ANCHOR BLOCK BOLT ON THE LEFT WITH TWO AXLE WASHERS OR THEY CAN USE THE ANCHOR BLOCK BOLT ON THE RIGHT BY REMOVING THE HEX BOLT AND DISCARDING IT. THERE YOU GO, ITS VERY SIMPLE THE USE OF 2 AXLE WASHERS ON LEFT ANCHOR BLOCK PIN MAKES UP FOR THE MISSING TAB ON THE HUB. |

I'm betting you left the grease seals in the uprights, correct? That's your problem. There's a grease seal on the S chassis axle since their uprights don't use a seal behind the wheel bearing. With both you've got them wedged against each other, preventing the axle from turning. It's basically two thick pieces of rubber jammed together. Pull the axle back out and remove one, either one, from each side. I like the idea of the seal in the upright personally so I pry the OE seal off the axle. Depends on condition, yours may be damaged and would warrant keeping the axle seal instead. J30 uprights have the same problem, I did a set three weeks ago and forgot during the install.

That is it. Knock it out, or knock the one off the axle, either way. You only need one of them.

Okay, I took it out, reinstalled it, and still the same issue. So instead my dad used a spare axel washer and we grinded the inside so until it would fit through the axel. We placed it in the back as indicated in the pictures and it acted as a spacer, it went out of the space by a few thousandths of an inch. After that we reinstalled it AGAIN and tighten it down all the way to see if if would do anything, and it spun fine. Has anyone done this?

Are you by any chance using J30 5 bolt axles? If you are you have to knock of the metal seal on the axle itself.

Very strange. I've never heard of that happening unless it's a seal issue. The spacer isn't a bad idea, I'd just be worried about why you had to do it in the first place.

The guy I bought it from said he pulled it off his friend Z32 after it was crashed. Bought it awhile back, with the whole assembly. We also measure the diameter of the outer ring where the seal was and we noticed that the Z32 uprights was a bit bigger. I dunno if that makes a difference.

Here's the axel on mine right now. I don't think the previous owner changed the axels. But here's a pic, if you need a closer shot just let me know. I want to get this problem fixed fast.

They pry off easily with just a screwdriver and hammer. You won't hurt a thing. And I agree, they look distorted from being forced against something.
