![]() Okay, so I am going to be pulling the KA24DE and the tranny from my wrecked 1996 240sx parts car to go into my 1995 with a blown motor... My question is is it possible to pull the motor and transmission as one piece (is there enough room?) The FSM states that you must remove the transmission first - and I was wondering if anyone has pulled the motor without removing the tranny...

yes, it can come out as one piece. remove the radiator and there is enough room. You need a pretty big lift, it needs to be hoisted pretty high to clear the front core support.
as an alternative, you can drop the whole front subframe out the bottom. lower contol arms and all. sometimes this is easier if your lift isn't that big.

If you also jack up the rear of the car, it makes the angle required to get the engine out less, so it's easier. The first time I did it with one of those screw type engine levelers and the second time without. It's alot easier with the leveler, but possible both ways. I did it the second time by myself as well, scary, but it worked. I won't ever disconnect the trans from the engine in the car again. I'd pull the engine to change the clutch.

Ceiling Height
Thanks for the responses guys, I would prefer to do it by pulling the motor and the tranny togther... will a garage with a normal ~10 foot ceiling be high enough, or should I just plan to do it outside?
thanks -jeff |

I did it in a old garage, less then 10ft. It was just fine, you have to back the car out the garage so you have like 6ft in front of the car to get it out.

If the cars wrecked, its real easy to pull out as one unit. i pulled out the radiator and then just choped off all the mangled front end parts w/ a sawzall w/ a wrecking blade on it.
As for the height, the tallest thing will probably be the engine hoist, so if it fits, your be fine. I actiually did mine in the driveway though. One other thing, make sure to pull of the shifter. It may be able to fit out with it still in, but itd probaby get broken off. Oh, by the way, are you parting out the wrecked car?? Sorry, dont mean to be a vulture, just was lookin for a couple things. |
