A teen was killed early this morning when a stolen car he was driving crashed into an apartment complex during a chase with San Bernardino County sheriff's deputies, officials said.

The pursuit began at 1:46 a.m., when a deputy noticed a driver and passenger switching positions inside a 2000 Honda stopped at the intersection of Highland and Arden avenues, sheriff's Sgt. Dave Phelps said. The car immediately ran a red light, Phelps said.

The deputy gave chase for three minutes and three miles, as the Honda ran several stop signs and red lights, Phelps said. The driver then lost control at the corner of Lynwood Drive and Sterling Avenue in San Bernardino, crashing through a wall and into the Terrace Village apartment complex, Phelps said.

Two people were inside the unit the car struck, but were uninjured, San Bernardino police Sgt. Jarrod Burguan said.

Both occupants of the Honda were ejected. The driver, 17-year-old Michael Brinkman, a Loma Linda resident, was pronounced dead at the scene. The passenger, Ismael Rodriguez, 20, of San Bernardino, was taken to Loma Linda University Medical Center in critical condition, Phelps said.

The crash busted a gas line at the complex and forced the evacuation of 100 units, Burguan said. Residents were allowed back inside at 6 a.m.

The Honda was later found to be stolen Sunday night in Highland, Burguan said.
