Irritated, my rant.
Ok...so for the last year or so they have been building a 4.5 mile track about 4-5 miles away from my house. Now most of you would be thrilled...tons of sweeping, banked turns.. long straights, etc etc.
But heres the kicker. Its a members only track. This means: •no open track days, EVER. •never even seeing the thing in person •no WATCHING races •nothing. no fun....ever. To become a member, its $100,000...plus another $7,000 every year after that. Its much more than just the track, they have an on site hotel, spa, etc etc. Jeff Gordan, Jerry Seinfield, and others are all members (they already have quite a few hundred members already and they JUST had the opening ceremony for it.) They drive their $500,000 benz through some of the poorest areas in the state (particularly Monticello - where the track is located), while everyone else is just struggling to get by. Its upsetting that here's something that could be really beneficial to the area (its a very poor area - highest AIDS and teen preg. rate outside of nyc) and they're doing nothing but catering to the over indulgent playboys who want to drive upstate to abuse their 4 million dollar ferrari. I have no problem with someone who works hard for their money enjoying it, but that all inclusive attitude just gets under my skin. Even if they had open track days once a month, I'd be happy as hell. The warehouse I work at drops of tons of material to the track, and the construction workers were even saying "yeah...we're building a track we'll never see, or ever be able to drive on"..its like an ongoing joke with everyone. Its not jealousy thats fueling this rant..I'm thinking more about the community that could prosper from it. With a track like this, It would bring in tons of people. New hotels would open, shopping, etc would open up...and hell...maybe the unemployment level would decrease a little.. ![]()

Good God, that's bullshit. I don't understand the attitude of catering entirely to the small stupidly wealthy community while the other 99.99% are completely ignored.
I live in a military town; you can throw a rock in any direction and hit a naval base. You'd think that with the way the economy is, and the number of low- to middle-income military families around, they'd be putting up more affordable housing. Nope. "Prince Edward Estates," a complex of monstrous cookie-cutter houses that all look exactly alike and probably cost $800,000.

I think that is very unfair. I live in Ottawa Ontario and recently (Within the last few years) There was a track built about 45minutes away from my house located in Calabogie. It's the longest and one of the nicest tracks in Canada and even THEY have open track days. Mind you to participate your car can not be over 92Db on a flyby and it cost's 400$ for the day, but at least they allow it to be open for anyone who can afford it.

Thats kinda what VIR is, but it's not exclusive to the rich, they are very good about combining both worlds, the rich and the average.
It amuses me you all act like it's a crime against humanity. A race track isn't a public service, it's an investment. Just like private golf courses and the like. It is kinda fucked that it's in a super poor area, and they don't contribute anything, but such is life I guess.

So much better than a golf country club.
Sounds really nice. maybe in the future they'll open it for the public, but I'm sure for the time being they want to make their money back and cater to those who can afford it for the inclusive lifestyle. Can't hate. To each's own. |

Its not really a big travesty... Its just like any country club where all they do is play golf except in this one, they have a race track.
Think about it... If you went through the trouble of somehow making a shitload of money, wouldnt you want to do things with a little exclusivity? I don't want some kid in a shitbox Civic running on the same track as me if I'm driving a 911 GT2 or something. That'd be like Tiger Woods going to a public golf course. It makes no sense. I'm sure they'll open it to the public every now and again, but I dont think anyone should feel entitled to using this track. It's a private investment, they can do whatever they want with it.
