I'd switch to full synthetic. Makes the tranny smoother. I just put in full syn Mobil 1 75-90 weight. Works really nice. Full synthetic works great with gears, it's just not worth it in engines. Use conventional oil for that.

I think full synthetic sucks in a tranny. Granted I didnt use redline but my SR shifted like crap after I put it in and was fine after switching back. I only use synthetic in my engine but it is a SR20DET and thats all that should be run in it. Conventional oil is fine for non turbo KA's though (its what I used as well).

Usually if your gearbox is scratching as you put it in certain gears, going to synthetic will most likely make it worse. The scratching or whatever your getting is most likely due to like you mentioned worn out synchros or something inside the transmission, and is definetely not the clutch. Generally, you use synthetic on brand new/ very new transmissions since everything is in proper spec. Kind of the same theory that you don't use synthetic on a worn out engine with 300k miles on it, but you need thicker weight oil to fill in the gaps that have accumulated. hope this helps, if it makes much sense. Solution. Try changing the oil with just a high quality gear oil. Also, look at the oil you drained, if you notice little metal specs, means something is getting rubbed on.
