ok, so, my car, after i've started it, sputters a little when i start to drive, and it feels under powered. i also get about 100 miles to the tank. could it be an O2 sensor? leaky injectors? both?? any help would be awesome.
Thanks guys, -Garrett |

yup, stock, and not beaten cuz it's auto (don't trip, i'm swapping it, lol) i'm pretty sure the gauge is right, it hasn't been wrong before, and it still works to my knowledge

I don't think your O2 sensor would affect your gas consumption by that much. That seems pretty extreme. Have you actually looked at your gas by taking out the fuel pump and looking yourself? I've heard of plenty of peoples floater thing going whack on 240's.
I would check for leaks on the hoses, start at the gas tank and move your way down towards the engine or something. |

Sounds like my Rx7, do you have a rotary in there?
Also check you fuel filter, spark plugs, dirty maf? There are many variables that affect mileage. If you do a full tune up it will probably increase your mileage. |

Do the milage guys. its easy to calculate.
As for your float working: If you open your fuel tank to check it your retarded. It may not prove anything. Next time the car is almost empty, fill it up all the way. should take about 10 to 13 gallons, depending how empty it was. If it takes 2 gallons, then you know the float is messed up. but sputtering and shit, could even be a bad or cracked vacum line. just replaced one on mine. was giving me horrable milage and i had to depress the accelerator a little at idol. |

I'm gonna change my spark plugs, spark plug wires, and oxygen sensor this weekend. Hopefully that will do something. I might also put that fuel injector cleaner in too.

I think its time to explain how to calculate mileage.
Step 1. Fill the gas tank Up all the way, hold the nozzle until it clicks itself off, etc Step 2. reset trip odometer to zero, then start the car and leave, dont drive off and reset the odometer, reset it first. Step 3. Drive until gauge shows you need more gas Step 4. Fill Up again, Yeah this takes you filling you car up completely Twice. Step 5. Make note (look at the pump) of how much gas it took to fill up the Second time Step 6. Find the calculator on your cell phone Step 7. Divide the number of miles shown on the odometer by the number of gallons on the pump the during the second fill up (miles/gallons) Step 7. Revel in the fact that you now know your mileage And Start again at Step 1. note that odometer may be incorrect due to your wheel/tire combination also note that regular use of this method can help to notice things before they become more of a problem |

Replace you 02 first, then if it still is happening, lmk I could fit you in for some diagnostic time at the shop on Sunday (mission viejo) just throw me like 80 bucks.
I usually charge 80/hr but Ill help you out for as long as I can

Honestly it sounds like a leaking injector. I have yet to see an o2 sensor cause that type of fuel consumption, but if your not having serious driveability/power loss issues which you would with the above mentioned possibilities i would honestly say you have a bad fuel level sending unit. Break out a multi-meter and do a resistance check on the sending unit circuit and that will tell you if your sending unit is faulty. That or you will see some sort of physical obstruction with the float. Plus i get close to 300 miles to the tank with my SR and thats with an untuned AEM. Check your timimg, check your oil to see if you have excessive gas mixed in there, check the condition of your spark plugs. Id be willing to bet its a combination of several things causing your excessive gas consumption.

do u have a bad radiator? my car was doing the same thing and it was because of my radiator being bad. your car could not be running at the right temp and causing the ecu to send more gas to compensate for the wrong temp reading. hope this helps.

A leaky injector doesnt cause a unexplainable tachometer anomaly, I would say this is some sort of electrical issue, as in shotty wiring by the ecu plug/ecm etc.

I'm betting that it's your coolant temperature sensor. by the description of your symptoms on start up the car would run extra rich causing sputtering and bad mileage if your coolant temperature sensor is out of calibration. I would pull out your trusty ohm meter and take the resistance "key on engine off" then again when the car warms up. then i would look in the fsm specific to your car and check to see if your readings are within specifications. if not then it's a 20 dollar fix at autozone. the ecu works by sense and response. If the ecu is seeing a a signal from a sensor it will respond according to how the ecu is calibrated for that specific sensor. the cts may be working but sending a faulty signal causing a rich situation. 02 sensor is not important on an obd1 car. also check vacuum lines, and check your maf. my money is on the cts.

^yeah, (steve)
Check ALL fuses and the relays that are under the hood. Now look around for wires that might be shorting. My car had a big one under the relay/fuses under my airbox. It had corroded, arced and burnt up half the fuse box when i bought the car. clean things up if they arent already, so you can see in the engine area better. |
