valve problems

I am thinking about gettting a 240 '93, but there is a engine ticking, knocking. In the head. It sould like a bad valve. How much would it cost me to fix? If I fix it how much would the materials be?

Thanks

Where is the tapping coming from? The front of the head? If so, it's probably just the front timing chain guide. This is a fixable problem on a lot of 240's. Just take off the valve cover, remove the guide, get a new valve cover gasket, and bolt the cover back on, make sure you have a torque wrench so you don't over torque the bolts. Go ahead and do a search too, there are several topics like this.

if you have a long screw driver, you can put your ear on the handle, and the tip on the engine, and use it as a stethescope to determine Where the noise is comming from.

Like Linja said.. front cover = timing chain, anywhere around valve train = lifter tick.
