PFC/dataloggit users technical help please

Sup guys just need a little help getting my computer to recognize the dataloggit.

Power FC L-jetro
s13 redtop

Everytime i try to get my computer to communicate with the it says com port not open. Or when i try to select it from the tools dropdown on the datloggit software every com port will be ghosted out and un-selectable.
So something is up with the com ports and it wont connect with the dataloggit.

Other pertinent info: As you would know the dataloggot uses a serial cable and not analog or usb. So i have a Serial to USB adapter could this be the problem?

So in short how do i get my PFC dataloggit to communicate with my computer? I am not computer illiterate but this seems to be beyond my scope of computer experience. Maybe its best if you talk to me like a infant on this one.
