Thumbs down burnt rubber/plastic smell...?!?!?!

I really need some help on identifying this problem...i was coming home from school the other day and i saw smoke coming up through my shift boot. It wasnt a whole lot of smoke...less than a cig puts out. It smelled kinda like burning rubber or plastic. i thought it might be some faulty wires from the ciggarette lighter or the mirror switch but was neither. I dont know a whole lot about car when it comes down to it...so any advice would be apprecitaed.

i was kinda thinking that, but i havent really had any problems getting into gear or any problems taking off. my dad told me a while ago that his truck did somthing similar and it turned out to be his throw-out bearing???? Dont know if its that or wut it could be.

well i have destroyed a clutch before.. and youll know when a throw out bearing is shot... but from my past experience if u smell something burning its usually your clutch.. other then that it would probably be bad stereo wiring for hookin up wires wrong or theyre loose and hittin against metal.. but good luck...
