I am doing networking. The biggest up and coming technologies are VoIP and wireless. If you can get into either of those concentrations, you should do pretty well to start out. Thing is, you need to keep up on whatever else is up and coming in order to keep your value to the company you work for.

you should find some chance to do observations and face to face interviews with those professional. To learn about what kind job they do and what are their life style like. it is your life, your decision.

Maybe you should check out what jobs you can actually get with what degrees,so you'll know what you will actually being doing all day long, what kind of pay to expect, etc. Maybe hit up some of those places? See what their like?

Just an idea.

accounting and finance here.

you know that the Big 4 are always hiring entry level accountants, so gettinga job isn't a big deal.

finance gurus usually get paid big bux - though life for financial analysts tend to suck (corp or investment banking)...

I just graduated with a degree in IT specializing in Knowledge Management. All of my friends did the networking specialization so I would say there is much to do in networking. I agree with the talk with a couple professors from each department to see if they are the type of people you want to be around and that it is the life you want to live afterwards.

the good professors have contacts in corporations, which may lead you to get a job in the near future. Also, if the university brings back alumni to talk about their experience in the real world, that would be value adding to your education and decisions toward your majors/concentrations.

Some of my thoughts:

You want to explore different options (courses) in college/university if time and money allow while observing market employment data. you don't want to end up to something you don't like even the money is good, since eventually the job will overgrow you ---> you will jump ship in the long run.

so, explore options, keep your eyes open, talk to the professors (and kiss ass) and alumni, and work hard.

Most of the shit you learn in college are worthless, most of the courses are there to help you think/learn, so that once you join the real world, you can pick up shit more quickly.

Now, ^^^ is coming from yours truly who has a degree in Business Administration with concentration in Accounting and Operations Mgt. from a top 10 B School - I am not bragging on what I have done, but... what I have written down was what I have seen so far about education. I am in MBA program now... SHIT grad school is worse than undergrad - bunch of arrogant, ignorant, and stupid people think they know how to do finance and accounting... ... may be that's one of the reasons that Enron and WorldCom went down ---> stupid Finance MBAs...

If I ever get enough money and time to go back to school I want to get into graphic/commercial/digital design. Depends on where I end up, they're all pretty much the same, with different names at different places. I figure if there's something I enjoy doing, and can make money at it, that's what I want to do.

^^ I studyed like a MF and still got crap grades. I have all four tests infront of me for the final tomarrow and they read in order: 60, 44, 66, 56. I study more then any one else but screw up. It is a morning class so I think the reason I am doing bad is because I dont sleep at night and drink the night away, then I show up for the test and go blank. The teacher told me to stop showing up to class drunk, but I am not drunk, just pale and looking like crap from staying up all night drinking. I dont think I will pass, since the teacher does not curve, but I will change my sleeping pattern for next semester, or get calc2 later in the day. Sorry for the rant, but when you say "enjoy calc2", I now shiver when I see or hear Integra because it reminds me of those damn Integrals.

that means you'll probably die when you get to something called double integrals. oh, how about triple integrals? how about triple integrals over spherical coordinates? actually that's not that bad - vector calculus is bad. like stoke's theorem

yea, drinking and lack of sleep will kill you.

i felt like calc iii was a lot better than calc ii. in calc ii it felt like i was learning things that had no application, like it was just difficult conceptually. calc iii seemed easier to understand b/c there was a point to it. like finding area, volume, density, etc. as far as getting worse? i think advanced calc is real real bad, but an m.e. shouldnt have to take that, if i'm not mistaken.

sr240det:
my g/f had no idea what she wanted to do and took a test at the career center. you want to do something that u enjoy. it's not that hard to make money if you work hard. ur better off doing something that doesnt feel as much like work. all of my relatives barely finished high school (some didnt) and they make great money, but they work real hard and u can tell they dont enjoy even one moment of it.
i'm not saying that you should always be happy at work, but u should be able to enjoy it once in awhile. i have a few friends in web developement and digital design who enjoy it a lot. u need to really need to make a good first impression with those careers though. networking i dont know much about, but doesnt sound too interesting. like everyone has suggested, talk to people in those fields that interest you and see what they have done with their degree.

sr24det: everyone has given sound advice, nothing more to expand on and nothing you didn't know already. do something you enjoy regardless of pay, and you will find a way to pay for what you enjoy.

as for the calculus conversation, i am a biochemistry major (spanish and math double minor) at UNL and just finished calculus III last semester and am now done with my math requirements. calc III is so much easier than calc I or II because it is nothing new just expanding on what you already know. multiple integrals and derivatives are really not that bad, so if you have to take it don't fret none. if anyone is any sort of engineering major then you will be taking alot more math than just calc III, like differential equations and what not - i am scared to even think about that stuff.

bottomline: regardless of your goals, the education is going to be the least fun, but its what separates one applicant from the next so do it once and take it seriously.

don't do something you don't need. i love music, but i didn't need a degree in it to do what i want to do with it, so i switched to computer science. i got my degree with specialization in networking and data comm. now i'm a web developer on salary with benefits and i've never taken a web class in my life. it's just something i started tinkering with in '97

here's an interesting read, slightly off topic

i thought calcIII was a lot harder. not partial derivatives or multiple integrals but the vector calculus. stokes theorem and divergence theorem and some line integrals. that stuff wouldn't be that hard actually if we hadn't had to learn the whole chapter in 3 class periods, have a test on it then a cumulative final the next class period. basically 50% of our grade over a period of 5 days

looking forward to some diff eq and linear algebra though

calcIII isn't too bad since, as mentioned above, it is primarily just an expansion of topics already learned in I & II. Linear algebra is easy, it's just a bunch of matrix manipulation which isn't that hard, just a few rules and concepts to memorize. partial differential equations kicked my ass, though, I don't know how the hell I passed that class, because I was completely confused the entire semester (probably didn't help that I missed the first week of class).

for business majors, no need to take many calculus classes...

accounting classes get into my nerves though... All those freaking rules and apply those into debit and credit... I have advanced financial accounting left next semester for grad school - that's THE most difficult course here at the Business School.

Finance courses - corp finance is easy, investment is hard - I am kind of clueless...

What makes the difference?
GO TO CLASS and LICK ASS...
