is this coilover repairable

hey guys. my friend gave me all 4 of his coilovers since he wrecked his s14. i was wondering if this one is repairable and if so, if anyone can recommend a place. thanks in advance!

that is going to be a big problem bro..i would say that is shot. he must have crashed his car wutever side of the car with that coilover on it..

That doesnt look bad as long as the shock is still intact. Looks like it just needs to be welded back into place. Any good welder should be able to do it.

that looks like a tein HE. if it is a tein one, you could call up tein and order that lower mount separately.

wow quick reply! me heart zilvians . it is a tein HE but since its not in production anymore, they dont got parts. the coilover is still in excellent condition (friend drove it for about 600 miles).
breakindrifts - recommend any place to take it to? dont know much welders here except for muffler shops and i dont trust those guys

I say send the coil over to tein. Even though it's no in production they should still be able to service them. But it isn't that bad so any metal shop should be able to bend it back then weld it.

heh send it to tein..and they will charge you a load...they mite as well juss rebuild your coilover...rather juss find a really good welder as breakindrift said..they would juss heat it up and bend it back in place and re-weld to connect it..

if they don't make it, you can still have that lower mount made.

But even though HE's may be discontinued, there's still a good chance that the new coilovers they make have the same thread diameter and pitch so a lower mount for another set of tein coilovers would work the same.

it's not a big deal, try sending it to tein. If its too much, take it back and find a metalworker who can bend that back then run a strong weld around the whole thing.

Well, it must've taken quite a ding with that type of damage. I would say that as long as the rest of the assembly isn't too tweaked, get it TIG welded-it should hold just fine.

haha gotta240 was correct. tein simply said that it was no longer in production so they are unable to fix / repair it. so i guess ill be taking this to get it welded. thanks for all your help!

If you didnt already drop it off at a shop, I would opt for a quality GTAW (tig) procedure. Dont take it to a muffler shop or a garage etc. Bring that to a proffesional welder that is sufficient in TIG welding....should not cost more than say 40 bucks. Id do it for under 20, but you'll prolly get charged more.

MIG weld would be better... Tig thins out the metal where you weld it... Mig only adds more metal.

^^ haha c'mon know....eeeaasy with what you say if you dont now what it is that you are saying. You are reffering to undercut, and any good welder knows how to avoid that shit. If you have a powerful enough MIG, you can easily get undercut with it to.

Take it to a machine shop, automotive or otherwise, or a welding shop. They all weld things with much higher tolerances and structural requirements than strut mounts.

hey guys. sorry to bother u guys again. i took this to my mechanic just to see what he recommended and he said that this was prob impossible to repair since the heat from welding it would create enough pressure to make the shock explode? anyone know how else this could be repairable? thanks

First off, slap your mechanic. Then slap yourself in the face. Then unscrew the lower mount from the shock and hit yourself with it. Then take it to a welding shop and have them fix it. Thread it back onto the coilover, put the coilover on the car and then try and not crash into a tree backing out of your driveway.

AHahaha^, Oh yeah and I can't really reccommend a place because I dont know Pomona area. You dont have any good tuning shops that are handy with fabrication and welding? Just google around for a local shop good with welding.

Please understand what you are talking about before you say anything.


I have a TIG welder at home and do alot of TIG welding myself.


If you simply fuse the base metal together with the torch, you can thin the cross-section.


However, with TIG, you have the ability to add filler rod by hand. This way you can create a nice thick fillet across the joint.


A proper TIG weld is much stronger then a MIG weld.

Add to that, with TIG, your heat is much more localized and controlled. Not to mention it is also much cleaner and spatter free.

try steen in signal hill, he is uber tig welder, and fairly priced. NO the shock will not explode, since it is the rear and it is not gas-filled, only the fronts are. If it was the front then you would be fuc`d. Yeah mig over tig... hmm where in the world have you been.

The rear shocks have gas in them too. And it seems that you don't understand the idea of a threaded body damper.
