When i first got my 95' 240, the previous owner had some bunk-ass Chrome plated rims ("Bling-Blings" aren't my thing).  I was in my garage this weekend and i saw them.  The design isn't that bad on them and I would like to use them w/o the chrome.  

I have done some looking up on the internet to see how i could take off the chrome.  I used to strip paint with brake fuild when i would repaint things, but i dont think that is going to cut it on chrome.  I read the Chlorine that you put in pools works really good to take off chrome.  Also, I heard Easy-Off oven cleaner is ok too.  Does anyone know of anything else that might work?<img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt='???'>?

I strongly suggest that u don't strip the chrome off and here's why:

If it's an aluminum rim you have to either clear coat it or anodize it or you'll have oxidization in no time....white ugly stuff. Plus neither of these are "do it yourself" applications; well u could clear-coat but i dunno' how durable it would be.

If it's steel (which i stongly doubt) it'll rust.

I guess the real question is: what do you plan on doing to the rim after u get the chrome off? What kind of finish are you looking for?  Standard chrome finish is very thin but tough as hell, it's acually a deposit of...damn what's the metal....some metal anyway.

I don't know if this helps but sometimes the best help i've recieved is someone saying "Are you SURE you want to do that?!?!"

BTW: Easy off is known to take off anodizing

If you like the pattern of the rims why dont you just send them to company and have them powder coated the way you want them.

Thankz for the reply guys.  Yea, I have heard that it is not a DIY job and should be taken to a shop to do it.  The thing is, like always, the funds are short.  I was thinking about selling them and putting my "blackies" on.  The thing is that I have no tires on them.  I don't know how much I could get for the rims.  Maybe I will just get them painted.  Anywayz, thanks a lot guys, very much appreciated!
