Reviving a DSM
So I've got a lead on a really good deal for a beater TSi, but it needs some help.
It needs a new water pump and timing belt, got those covered. It has also been sitting for upwards of three years, and thats where I'm a little sketchy. What will it need to get it running reliably again? It will need new brakes (rotors and pads), gaskets, and a fuel filter with exchanged gasoline I'm sure. Any other suggestions though would be very appreciated?

Probably the 2 biggest problems you'll have is sludge buildup and rubber hoses. Since it's been sitting for so long, you may want to clean up the intake tracts. You may also want to see how the compression is doing and see how well the block is doing on the whole.
Otherwise, I would say replace all the belts and all the rubber hoses. Check your brake lines as well. Check your suspension to see if they're leaking. See if the tyres are flatspotted since it's been sitting for so long. Flush all the fluids and replace all the filters. Change spark plugs and wires. Maybe some other minor things. Do you know why it was sitting for so long? That should take care of most of the problems you'll have with it. Good luck. |

Yea, I've actually seen it practically every day of its past 3 years. It was dropped off at a mechanic's shop with the water pump and timing belt change due. The owner could not afford it at the time, and has since found his true calling in the state pen. Ironic, I know, but he has authorized the mechanic to apply for the title, and I'm going to buy it from the mechanic.
Thank you very much for your help. More suggestions are appreciated!

No, there is no lein on the vehicle. It has just sat for the past three years. Since the owner is now in jail and the mechanic just wants it off his lot, I'm able to get a real good deal on it.
With permission from the previous owner, the mechanic is able to apply for a new title in his or his business' name. But it definately won't be a cake walk, it needs some help getting back up on it's feet. It's a 95-96 TSi by the way, I think that was the 7-bolt motor.

well this definately isn't going to be a big powerhouse of a car. A few bolt-on's is all. I'm buying this car to get out of my GM Envoy right now so that I can eventually save money for an SR.
I just pray the AWD doesn't hook me ![]()
