nismo soild shifter...b&m..bushings?
Ok so here is the deal. I have done a bit of searching but still am unclear on what to buy. MY current shifter is loose as shit and i hate it. I hear that egay shifters suck and i shouldn't mess with um. Now i would like to get a nismo solid shifter which costs 150+ and BM one is right around the same (i understand BN makes SHORT shifters) now my friend told me that i could get new bushings and that would stiffen eveything up. Is this true? Where can i buy new bushings?
Also what are the BM short shifters like? do they have a good feel to them and are they worth the money? and is the nismo short shifter worth the money? thanks for oyur help |

Authentic Nismo shifter just makes the shifter feel more firm and precise, not shorten
B&M and 1 piece shifters keep the shifting acting smooth and stiff, as well as shorten throws. I have a 1-piece B&M replica, Mookeh short shifters or something like that. Has good reviews here on Zilvia and I like it a lot. Was around 45 bucks shipped but Im sure price has gone up now. You could buy new shifter bushing, its the one that goes on the end of the ball that you stick in the linkage, but in my opinion its better to just replace the whole thing.

Go for the pilot short shifter from phase2...well worth the money. It's a C's replica.
The Mookeh crap short shifter didn't work for me...I tried it several times and had several other people including mechanics install and it wasn't fit for crap. E-mailed the seller and gave me crap with a bad attitude. I ended up throwing that POS egay short shifter away.

^ I bet it wasnt the 1-piece version, stay away from the ones that you install onto the stock plate.
And if you have to pay a mechanic to install a short shifter, you shouldn't be driving an S13.

yeah, I have the Pilot SS, and I am very pleased with it. cleaned up 80% of the slop and the shorter throws feel great. And it's hella easy to install, though I would recommend getting some snap-ring pliers if you dont have them to make it easier.

Dude, I just picked up a brand new shifter bushing from the dealership.
With no discounts or anything, it was $2.50 for the bushing, so I said, "what the hell, it's $2.50, less than a fucking value meal at McD's or Burger King, and it cannot be bad considering it's OEM and brand new." So I ordered it, put it in, and wow, what a difference. Still like, very little bit of slop, but it took out all the vagueness of whether or not I'm in gear, or the vagueness in the H pattern that I can find gears a lot easier now. Best $2.50 spent on the car. |

hey, i have a b&m short shifter and its great, it really really makes it short. lets put it this way, i had it in 1st and people ask me where first is because they though it was neutral. its kinda funny and i do know that seems a little exagerated but its true. but the shifting is great, takes a little while driving it to get used to it because of the big difference from a stock shifter to the b&m one. it took away all the play, its great. i recommend it. and i just ordered a nismo knob if you want i can tell u how it feels. the knob i had before was a sparco one, worked and felt great, but i stripped one of the little bolts that holds it in place to is all lose, so i went with one that will just screw in. sorry its so long just my $.02.

the b&m is very mechanical and precise. really really different
i hate the way it feels. dramatically different. try and check someone's out before you buy one most of the short shifters nismo/c's style aren't too bad i like stock because its nice and mushy and has good feedback through the transmission. all preference

I got a B&M, its short and notchy and around 5-6000 rpm it starts to rattle. It will take a while to get use to it sometimes I get stuck on the wall going into 4th.

B+M shifter
I have driven an S13 w the B+M shifter and far prefer my stock shifter. The shifts are extremely short woth the B+M and it is pretty easy to mis-shift. I also distinctly noticed the buzzing above about 5000 rpm mentioned by someone else as well..

lol the b&m shifter is basically made for drag and track racing, and you just have to get used to it, in all honesty i haven't missed shift since i first put it in. and that rattle above 5k i read sumwhere or heard sumwhere that the new version of the b&m gets rid of the rattle, but i'm not sure, if sum knows for sure, let me know. but its not that bad, the onyl time i notcie that rattle is if i'm on the freeway at 5k in 5th. good luck with your choice,i hope you like what ever you get.

Choice of shift knob weight makes a HUGE difference on shifter "feel." I had a lightweight leather NISMO knob on my C's, it felt ultra stiff. I changed it with the massively heavy stock OEM knob and it "balanced" the feel.
Just as others have mentioned, all preference ![]()

Well shit, would anyone buy a shiftknob that had an adjustable amount of weighs inside of it so you could put it however you liked?

wootwoot, I'm not sure about that. It doesn't sound too far fetched.
All I know is certain knobs have certain weights. From my experience, from heaviest to lightest shift knobs, Nissan S13/S14 knob (I'm willing to say NISMO & other full metal knobs are around here) S15 Knob certain leather Momo knobs Nissan Maxima 30th anniversary knob that's what I know.

yeah i went from a lightweight sparco knob with a B&m and now with the same b&m i have a leather nismo shifter and i like the way the shifter feels, its kinda heavy, to me, making it feel better than the sparco, but like mentioned above, thats just me.

Now for something helpful, since your pussy is hurting. Tanabe sells a replacement aluminum bushing with their transmission mount kit that is much more solid feeling than the OE plastic and doesn't wear as fast. You also get the benefit of tightening up the sloppy ass mount so not only is the shifter tighter, the whole driveline is. Of course, you would have known that if you had bothered to search. Guess we all can't be a "moron with a high post count". |
