![]() Hey all,
Just started the car up after it coming back from the body shop, only to find a puddle of oil under the car... Sigh, what's wrong now... Looks like it's leaking from the crank pulley. I looked the seal up on nissan-auto-parts-dealer, was like 5 bucks, that made me feel happy, but how hard is this thing to replace? How do you take off the pulley? Is it just take out the bolt and pry, or do you need a puller? Looking in the FSM as well, once you get the pulley off, it says use a "suitable tool" to install the seal, what would this "suitable tool be". Also, if it isnt the front oil seal, what else could be leaking, its def coming from the front of the engine, and looks to me from near the bottom... Thanks! |

It is easy to replace the frunt seal, you will have to pull all the belts, ect. A suitable tool is a gear puller. You can get them pretty cheap, check your local pawn shop.
As far as where else it could be leaking, anything from the valvecover, upper timing chain cover, lower timing chain cover, oil pan, that is about all there is in the frunt. Start with the frunt seal, in doing the seal you will get a chance to look over everything else. |

fyi the crank pulley is thick. buy a puller with big max diameter and long ass arms. you will probably need to remove the mech fan and shroud for clearance. i did.
a 'suitable tool' is a flat edge screwdriver or a small pry bar. careful you don't damage the actual timing cover itself. if you're having problems with it, you can cut into it. once again, becareful not to fuck up your timing cover. |

Funny how both replies ignored your question. A suitable tool to install the oil seal would be a drift, appropriately sized, but I've always used a socket. I think the 32mm is just about right.

Well I think my dad's harmonic balancer puller for his big block is laying around somewhere, I'm sure that will be large enough... It was definately leaking off the bottom of the engine, and seemed to be coming from on top of the oil pan, but there were no signs near the fan pulley, couldn't really see down to much further... Is this seal a common thing to go after around 170000km?
Edit: Or if it's been sitting for approx 7-8 mnths... |
