No oil pressure on engine after rebuild!!!

Alright.. the problems just don't stop my 240 ka-t
I'm going to go through the chronology of things and then get to the problem

The first time trying to fire the car up it doesn't fire.. it turns over in a clunk... clunk clunk... clunk.... clunk clunk sound, but it has since gone away and the pistons and head still look good.

After trying to start it I noticed a huge puddle of oil was coming out from between the engine and tranny.

Dropped the tranny and realized the fucking machine shop pulled a plug for the oil galley and didn't tell me or give me another.

plugged the hole and put it back together. tried to start it again and finally after fixing my timing it runs.

Once it started I looked at my oil press. gauge and it wasn't reading anything at all... like mayb 7 lbs.

I shut it off immediately.

pulled the turbo feed line.. it was dry... cranked the car for a while... still dry

I read on a 240 board that some people had the same problem and it was some o-ring in the front cover. others said it was the oil pickup gasket.

I dropped the oil pan and checked the oil pickup... it's fine.

The oil pump should be fine.. the motor was pulled running. so what am I missing?

the one catch I can't get over is that I had oil pressure at one point in time!!! there is some oil in the turbo return.. and it had to fly out of the oil galley hole somehow. so besides plugging the hole why would the oil pressure go bye bye?

then i checked my dipstick and it said way above full

so i drained half a quart

then when i drained my pan i found out i only had about 2 quarts in the motor.... started out with 4 .. duh

i realized i had the wrong dipstick in

but i put 4 quarts back in and cranked it some more and i still didn't get any pressure

When I rebuilt my sr in the spring I had a hell of a time getting the oil system to prime and build any oil pressure. It required a well charged battery and continued cranking to finally get any oil to come out of the cam oiler bar and read pressure. Added up it was probably 5 minutes of cranking(not continuous of course). It may be that the pump isnt primed yet. However, since you are getting a reading, albeit low, this may not be your problem.

Anytime you rebuilt a motor, the oil pump should be changed. Just because it pumped before the rebuild doesnt mean its up to the task after. Anyhow, unplug the crank sensor and start the motor without ignition. Crank it until you the oil pressure comes up. If you didnt change the oil pump, I HIGHLY recommend it. Too many people forget to change oil pump, seals, etc when they do a swap or rebuild.
