computer noise in car?

So just like it says,
when I'm driving and picking up speed there is this noise between my steering wheel and my front drvier side tire, like it's in the dash somewhere. It sounds like a modem or when a computer is 'thinking'. it does not affect the way it drives or steers, there is no visible sign of anything hanging or scraping. anyone have this same experience?
thanks

Also, my engine light is on and it comes and goes. no real problems. think it might be the fuel filter. It usually is on when there is a full tank and feels slightly sluggish until there is less than a 1/4 tank. but it is till pretty sparatic. I 've had some white smoke when I first turn it on and rev it a couple times to get my idle steady. It actually has turned off after running for a while at lights. I gave it a tune-up w/seafoam last year in august so hopefully that's all it needs again.

check engine light when in mode I, is either on or off. It should only blink when you flash the ECU for codes.

In mode II it will tell you when the engine is running lean, and blink on and off.
So its telling you that your running lean at startup and after a while your running normal/rich. I believe. see FSM for details.

to change to mode I, make sure the screw on the ecu is turned all the way left. to go to mode II, go all the way right.

The noise is coming from your radio/speakers. Try turning the radio way up with a blank cassette or something and you will hear it clearly. Both my s13 and my friends s13 do it.

"Computer" noise in car

do you have a nextel / boost phone - that'll do the same thing when it's sending packets.
If you do have a nextel, just put it near any amplified speaker and direct connect someone - if the clicking that you hear out of the amplified speaker is the same thing you're hearing in the car, it's just your phone getting picked up by the amplifier in the radio

the noise beemer is talking about is alternator whine its an electronic feedback created by the combination of magnetic fields and grounding issues...go to a car audio shop tell them you have alternator whine and see if they can supply something (used to be called a choke coil but now I am unsure what they use) to get rid of it.
